       On Public Speaking

Somehow winners don't always feel like winners. So where can that wonderful feeling come from? I'd like to suggest that a significant part of that feeling comes from helping others to become winners.

A SMALL BIT OF SIMON ADVICE --

These days there is so much emphasis - too much emphasis - on presentation style, podium presence, and image that we are forgetting how important the logical content is. Public speaking is not so much about keeping a mouth going as it is about showing the quality of a brain. I think the balance is shifting too far to the image side. Based on what I see in the corporate and political worlds, I am kept slightly worried about what I call the articulate incompetents. So I advise that when evaluating a speech or presentation, place the highest value on clear and logical thinking. I prefer to show people how to package their ideas - not to package people. Consider the difference.
